Human milk contains significant amountsof nucleic acids, nucleotides and related prod-ucts. 10% to 20% of non-protein nitrogen isrepresented by free nucleotides. The main nucleotide concentrations in humanmilk are: uridine, 14 ± 4.2 mg/l; cytidine, 27.3 ± 7.8 mg/l; guanosine, 14.9 ± 6.6mg/l; adenosine, 11.3 ± 6.9 mg/l.No other mammal has nearly the concentration that is found in human breast milk. In the past, free nucleotide content of the acellular part of breast milk was measured. Recently however, it has been recognized that human milk digested by the infant can generate substantially more available nucleo-tides or nucleosides. Their main source is the live cells with DNA and RNA contained in human milk.
Nucleotides in breast milk are essential to a baby’s developing immune system, they can enhance the ability of babies to resist bacillary dysentery effectively and can reduce the incidence rate of diarrhea. When breastfeeding isn’t possible, a nucleotide-enriched formula is recommended. |
